READING

INTENT - OUR VISION FOR READING

We value reading as a key life skill and are dedicated to enabling all of our learners to become lifelong readers. Through providing a language rich environment and high quality, diverse texts, all children will have the opportunity to acquire and develop essential reading skills. They will apply these skills in a range of subjects across the curriculum and, as a result, develop their curiosity about the world around them. We are aware that the reading opportunities we provide should allow children to develop ‘culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually’.

Experiences in reading will link closely to writing, with children developing a vivid imagination and an ambitious vocabulary. By the time learners leave Porter Croft Primary School, we expect that they have become fluent and competent readers who can recommend books to their peers, have a thirst for exploring a range of genres and participate confidently in discussions about books.

WHY READING IS IMPORTANT?

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and our aim is not only to teach our pupils to become fluent and accurate readers, but to enthuse our children to have a lifelong passion and love for reading.

We love to read!

The children receive an exciting, varied and progressive reading curriculum which is aimed at the varying needs of the children within the school. This enables the children to become independent, fluent readers and develop a love for reading and books.

Each classroom has a bright, engaging and inviting reading corner with comfy cushions that beg to be snuggled on with a favourite book. Each class has a wide range of books including fiction, non-fiction and poetry; some are to the topics being studied.

IMPLEMENTATION – READING PLANNING & SEQUENCING OF KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Guided reading and whole class comprehension sessions focus on the needs of the pupils and use a wide range of different texts, in different genres. These sessions provide the children with the opportunity to develop a range of key reading skills appropriate to their age. These skills include, retrieval of key information, inference, vocabulary, sequencing, predicting, understanding the intent of the author and making links between texts. This develops the children’s comprehension strategies and deepens understanding of a range of high quality texts which reflect the diversity within our nation and the wider world. At Porter Croft we believe strongly that children of all attainment bands are immersed in the same high-quality literature and the discussions that these texts promote.

The children enjoy special reading occasions such as National Poetry Day and World Book Day and timetabled sessions to encourage reading for pleasure. Parents are encouraged to read with their child at least three times a week and record it in a reading record. Individual reading books are from a range of sources which offer a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts.

All classrooms have book corners with a range of texts available and they are regularly updated and reflect the priority of reading within the learning environment as well as the class topic. The children can choose from subject-specific books and other age- reading for pleasure books.

We value stories and provide the opportunity for children to hear their teacher read aloud, to them daily. This may be a book selected by an adult or a recommendation from a pupil.

IMPACT OF OUR READING CURRICULUM

Impact

Through the teaching of reading, the aim of our provision will impact children in the following ways:

  • Learners will be able to read texts fluently and with good understanding across a range of genres.
  • Learners will develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
  • Children will be able to talk about books that they enjoy and make links between authors and texts.
  • Learners will acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
  • Learners will be able to talk confidently and critically about what they have read and consider the author’s intentions.
  • Learners apply their reading confidently across a range of subjects within the Porter Croft curriculum.

  • We monitor the impact of our reading provision through termly assessments, lesson observations, pupil voice and monitoring of reading response and reading record books. Attainment in reading is measured in the school using a range of formative and summative assessment methods. Formal reading assessments are undertaken in the autumn, spring and summer terms in Years 2 – 6 (inclusive) so that progress in reading may be tracked during the year. In Year 2, this is through the National SAT tests and teacher assessment. In Year 6 this is through the National SAT tests.

Teachers assess individual pupil’s decoding and comprehension strategies on a daily basis through whole class reading lessons as well as with one-to-one reading.

As a school we closely monitor all pupil’s books and hold individual termly meetings with all teachers to assess every individual child’s learning needs and progress. In addition, pupil voice is used to enable leaders to assess the impact of reading across the curriculum.

National data show that children at Porter Croft perform in line with or above National Expectations and that children with SEND or from a social disadvantage are achieving above National expectations

    INCLUSION

All reading lessons/activities are designed and planned to include all children through a range of approaches. Lessons are planned to facilitate the best possible outcome for all children within the class.
