Eco School Award

The Eco-Schools programme is designed to raise environmental awareness among young people and is run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The Eco Warriors have worked very hard with staff, pupils, parents and the local community to raise awareness of how we can become more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Children in each class, from Y1 to Year 6, who wished to be put forward for election, had to present reasons why they thought they would be good for the job. All children cast a vote for the nominees in their class to choose one Eco Warriors. Each class nominated two Eco Warriors. The votes were cast in secret. They were then counted and verified and the result were announced in a whole school assemblies.

On Thursday 2nd March, the Eco Warriors attended the School’s Climate Education Confrerence (SCESY) to learn about the climate crisis and possible solutions, managing feelings, and how we can improve our world. We explored the subject of food waste and food poverty and it’s impact on global warming. We found out about a great local charity called Food Works which redistributes excess food which local supermarkets are throwing away. They have food boxes available at their Handsworth site and a cafe and limited food boxes available at their space in Sharrow. They operate on a pay as you feel basis so you can buy food for as little as £1.00. We also learnt about reducing our school energy consumption through an organisation which supports schools called Energy Sparks and finally we learnt about Fast Fashion and the value of recycling and upcycling clothes in a workshop delievered by Common Thread
